I am own the Ubisoft Release, too and tried to install AoE plus Burning Rom on Win10. It works very well, if you use some help but AoE runs without compatibility mode this why it is easy. Going to install Age of Empires plus Expansion Pack, without Administration rights or compatibility mode. Download from Internet the Age of Empires Upatch, a fan patch to update the games with higher resolutions and so on and it fixes some compatibility issues, than run it normally. Follow the instructions. Go to the Programs and Features window from Windows 10 (you can find this menu in the applications menu of the settings) and activate everything under “legacy components” with DirectPlay, wait a second. Start the game.
It depends a lot on the hardware to have, most issues I encountered are driver related. Haven’t tried with my current PC, but on my old one they worked all fine. Also, installing the unofficial patches for Age1 and Age2 make things a lot smoother: Age1: Age2: I’m not sure if they remove copy protection of the games, if you don’t have an optical drive anymore you need a different solution. I used cd images for years, to save my CDs from getting even more scrated and probably brake at some point. An Alternative would be to wait for the next sale on Steam, I did that and bought them heavily discounted.
Try the Age of Empires Legacy Bundlen with Age 2HD and Age 3, with all Addons. A bit more is the Microsoft RTS Collectio with Age 2HD, Age 3, AoM EE, RoN EE and Halo Wars 1 with all Addons. The dates for the next sales are alread leaked, its 22nd to 28th November and 21st december to 4th january. I bought the original CD version–again–i found it at a GoodWill–sealed.
I installed AOE II Kings and Conquerors expansion. Ran the Age2XPatch and the UserPatch v1.4 setup with no hiccups.
On the first run–the splash and intro video beganthen crashed. I cannot start the game. I have run in compatibility mode for all going back to like 98.
What do I have to do yo? This was my favorite game for the longest and if I go the Steam route–it would be like the 3rd time I purchase the same game! LOLi dig it but not that much. Before running the Age2XPatch.exe patch, did you run the Age2upA.exe patch first? I would check first if the game can run already after those two before applying the UserPatch 1.4, also UserPatch version 1.5 beta is available at the moment. Compatibility mode need to be set on age2x1.exe to Windows XP (SP3) and mark “Disable visual themes”, “Disable desktop composition”, “Disable display scaling on high DPI settings” and “Run this program as an administrator”.

If you have a problem with graphics and strange colors, you will need to kill the explorer through the task manager before launching a play and start it again after finished playing AOE II. I did make a script for this once way back in time.
Now I play the AOE II HD Edition from steam, it doesn’t have all those problems. FWIW, I’ve had the original AOE installed on my Windows 10 system and working fine since the Windows 10 Beta was released. Run the game as administrator to fix a lot of the lockups. Do not expect AOE to do full screen or high def on new systems or large monitors. I have installed from the original game, the collectors game, the AOE/ROR set and copies of those discs on every Windows OS that has come out (and play AOE a half dozen times a week still). My current install is the original CD purchased new at the Microsoft Store in 1997.
AoE II HD Compatibility Patch Introduction This is a community created compatibility update for Age of Empires II HD to support the original The Conquerors. This patch does not violate copyright, no files from the original CD are used - more on this below. The purpose of the patch is to provide a quick and legal way to purchase the HD version of the game through Steam, and add compatibility with the regular AoE II. Motivation This patch provides the ability for those that have officially purchased, to play against / with other players using the original AoC release.
It's also for those that aren't interested in AoC HD at all, but have no easy way to purchase the original game, while - not everyone can buy from amazon. Reasons to play the original AoC include:. The original AoC still has a large and active community, especially for the Multiplayer version.
On Steam for e.g There is virtually no Custom Scenario community, yet other fan sites have larger and more active player bases. When AoC HD on Steam was announced many of us / the community were excited to finally have a quick and easy way to buy the game again and still be able to play with existing communities and friends.
This turned out to not be the case. This patch fixes the drawbacks of isolating communities, and allows us all to now play together as we had originally hoped for. These fan sites for the original AoC and it's communities sponsor some large events, such as or the. It is fair to say that while AoC HD has implemented some interesting stuff, it most certainly has quality and stability issues for a number of players.
This patch provides a solution to those issues. Take advantage of the fan patches created for the original version. Compatibility Mode Behavior When playing in compatibility mode, the game will behave exactly as it did in the original and the enhanced HD version, with community made patches such as UserPatch. Some Features will remain the same: HD resolutions will still be available through the community patches - please compare the screenshots below. Features disabled: the animated water won't be there. Features added: any feature present as part of userpatch or the multiplayer client use.

AoC HD in regular mode: How this is Possible and Legalities Starting in June 2015, the compatibility patch also includes some files from patch 3.9 release of AoC HD in the compatibility patch to simplify installation. These files would've otherwise between available in steam through betas opt into Patch 3.9 feature Compatibility mode is made possibly by combining either FE files or the 1.0c patch from Microsoft for the original game, AoC HD data files and a few small edits to 1.0c exe. There are no files included from this patch off the original CDs and because of this doesn't violate any copyrights. OK, if it's not illegal wouldn't Microsoft dislike this? We hope not, as the patch requires a full installation of AoK HD it definitely doesn’t help piracy, anyone pirating the game can already get full installations of the game available.
Further, we expect this to only gain more sales for Microsoft as it reduces motivation to pirate the original game if there is a quick and legal way to get it legally.
